Sweet Sixteen. On 18 September 2014 the people of Scotland voted in a Referendum to decide whether or not to remain in the United Kingdom. For the first time in a UK political vote, 16 year olds were eligible to take part in the vote.

Photographed in homes, bedrooms, public places and parks, Sweet Sixteen introduces us to a number of young people of voting age in Scotland and the spaces they spend time in.

These adolescents share their thoughts on being 16 in Scotland today and what, if anything, having this vote means to them.

Some described the Referendum as motivating them to become interested in politics for the first time in their lives. Others were unsure and nervous of how to vote, uncertain of what to think and some had no plans to vote.

This project also forms part of the larger series Homecoming 2013 – 2014.
